Brief and client requirements
An open plot with a beautiful east view and a harsh western sun. The family wanted a villa that felt open and connected to the garden, yet private from the road — with room for three generations under one roof.
- Bring daylight deep into the plan without overheating
- Separate guest, family and private zones
- A ground-floor suite for grandparents
- Indoor–outdoor living around a pool and courtyard
- Low-maintenance, long-life materials
The original property

- Open plot with road on the west side
- Strong western sun in the afternoon
- Gentle slope towards the east view
- Setbacks limiting the buildable footprint
Site photography for concept case studies is representative. Real projects show the client’s property with permission.
Design challenges
Privacy from the road
The best views face away from the road, but the entrance had to face it.
Western heat
Large glazing on the west would overheat the living spaces.
Three generations
Grandparents, parents and teenagers needed different levels of privacy.
Slope
The plot falls towards the east, complicating level access to the garden.
Planning approach
We wrapped the villa around a central courtyard, turning a solid, screened façade to the road and opening every principal room to the courtyard and eastern garden. Service spaces form a thermal buffer on the west. The slope is used for a stepped pool deck that brings the garden up to the living level.
2D architectural drawings
Measured drawings record what is there; proposed drawings show what will change. Red dashed lines mark walls to be removed.

Completed photographs
Completed photographs appear here for real projects.
Because this is a concept case study, there are no completed-site photographs. When a client project is published with this template, verified photography of the finished home is shown in this chapter — never renders presented as reality.
Outcome and design rationale
A villa that turns its back to the road and opens to light: every principal room looks into the courtyard or garden, the western service band keeps the living spaces cool, and the three generations each have a place of their own.
